Finally I got around to sum up the last day of IBM Connect. And I will also give you my thoughts on why I think IBM has lost the plot, and is not in touch with their customer base. More -->

IBM Connect 2013 Day 3

Ok, the days over here have been very busy, and after the conference was over I started feeling a bit under the weather. Hence my summing up of the last two days of IBM Connect is a bit delayed.

I started day 3 with a 10 km run and it was so incredibly warm (22 degrees Celsius) and humid at six in the morning that I could literally wring the sweat from my t-shirt. And I literally mean literally! On to the sessions: More -->

IBM Connect 2013 Day 2

I don't know what it is, but this time over here in the US I just can't get much sleep. After five hours I just wake up, and I'm not able to drift back into Neverland.

Since it got very late last night I decided to take a day off from working out. Not sure if that was wise or not since I was incredibly tired during the day. On to the sessions: More -->

IBM Connect 2013 Day 1

I had a hung over that could kill an elephant when I woke up. Guess I shouldn't have had that last...ok...those last three beers. Still, I persevered and went to the gym for an hour, after drinking about a liter of water, that I used to wash down two Paracepts.

I thought my head was going to explode but after getting hydrated again, and the endorphins filled my body, I was fit for fight.

After a great breakfast it was time for the opening session. The show started with the band They Might Be Giants. I had completely forgotten about them. If you wonder who they are, they are the band that created the theme tune for Malcom in the Middle. In addition, they have a great version of "Istanbul Was Constantinople." They did both during their set. According to them, 8 o'clock in the morning was the earliest show they had ever done.

You can read about Day -1 here and Day -2 here

Once again I only got five hours of sleep. No idea why, this has never happened to me before when going to the US. So I got up very early and did an 8 km run in the Lake Buena Vista area. After breakfast it was time for a day full of sessions.

Yes, even though the official opening isn't until Monday, Sunday is filled with sessions called Jump Sessions. I'll give you a breakdown of them all and my opinions of them: More -->

IBM Connect 2013 Day -1

Dolphin hotel
I only got five hours of sleep. My stomach wasn't happy with me, and I was probably pretty jet lagged. So I stumbled out of bed and found the hotel's gym to lift some weights. A short download of a conversion tool on my Android later and I was able to work out with relatively the same weights as back home (lbs vs kilograms, you see).

We then picked up the charming women from IBM and hit the shopping malls in Orlando. I get bored of shopping pretty quickly. But I did buy a pair of jeans, a new track suit (which I was in severely need of), a new pair of bike glasses and a pair of Converse sneakers.

Batman Converse SneakersAnd they weren't just any ordinary pair of Converse sneakers, they were Batman Converse sneakers!

However, I tired of shopping long before the rest of the gang, so I placed myself by a fountain, where birds started using my shoulders for a landing pad (I kid you not). After pulling out a pocket book and a Pepsi Max and my earphones, I took in the wonderful weather and waited for the others to finish.

Of course, when you do that, the other shoppers you travel with will think of you as a person who will look after all their bags while they do some more shopping. So after a while I had a pretty big pile of bags in front of me.

To beat the rush of people registering on Sunday, we repeated the success of registering on Saturday. The Lotus brand is now truly dead. The complimentary Lotusph...sorry... IBM Connect rucksack is now all black. It's not even yellow on the inside.

In the evening we were treated to a three course meal by IBM Norway. And I found out that I don't like snapper. But the chocolate covered nougat ice cream more than made up for this. I went back to the hotel early, hoping to get rid of some of my sleep depravation. Especially since the jump start sessions started the next day.

IBM Connect 2013 Day -2

It's the end of January, which means that it's time for Lotusphere again. Whoops! Sorry. It's time for IBM Connect, as there has been a name change. Nobody was too surprised about that, since not even Lotus Notes is called Lotus anymore. It's now IBM Notes. And the focus of the conference is no longer Notes, it's social business, on several technical platforms.

Greenland seen from the CockpitWe arrived in Orlando Friday night, local time. We flew from Oslo to Newark, a flight that took about 8 hours. However, I had a blast. First of all, the plane was only half full. So my boss and I had several rows of seats to ourselves in the back. Secondly, my cousin's husband was the pilot. I hadn't seen him in over twenty years, so we had a good long chat in the cockpit.

Yeah, I was in the cockpit! And I'm not ashamed to admit that it was pretty friggin' cool! Especially since I got to see Greenland through the viewport of the cockpit. The island was bathed in sunlight, and it was interesting to see the ice cap, with the odd mountain sticking out through several holes in the ice.

After another flight we arrived in a hot and humid Orlando. Just like last year, we went for dinner at Hooters. It's a fascinating place. The restaurant caters to every single male cliché in the book. There's sports on at least 30 TVs, they serve mostly grilled and/or deep fried food like chicken wings and there are loads of scantily clad young waitresses, with shorts so tight you can read their lips, and sweet little nothings that their almost wearing to cover everything below the cleavage. And when I say young, I mean Y-O-U-N-G.

Girls at Hooters

However, couples come for dates here. And both times I've been at Hooters, there have been children birthday parties with balloons, pizza, cake and 5-6 babes posing around the children for pictures. On this night a 12 year old was running from girl to girl, getting them to pose together with him while he hung on their shoulders with a huge horny grin. Can't blame him. At the age of 12 I would have had a constant erection in that place.

After a pitcher of beer I stumbled back to the hotel and fell asleep before my head hit the pillows. We've arrived!

On to Day -1
